Seattle-Bellevue: At the Forefront of Sustainable &~ Green Building
The year-round showcasing of lush greenery has earned Seattle and neighboring areas the nickname “The Emerald City.” In addition, this distinction has become synonymous with green building efforts, with Seattle ranking in the top 10 cities nationwide.
The vision is to achieve net-zero emissions in home construction by reducing energy demand, reusing consumed energy, and using low -carbon alternatives.
First, to achieve net-zero energy standards, all energy provided must be supplied on-site and recirculated to reduce a home’s energy consumption and lower toxic emissions released into the environment. The progress in the availability of energy- efficient building materials combined with smart-functioning mechanical operations supports the requirements for achieving green-building status.
The vision is to achieve net -zero emissions in home construction by reducing energy demand, reusing consumed energy, and using low -carbon alternatives. As architects and home contractors incorporate these methods in luxury home construction, Seattle is edging closer.
“Reducing carbon emissions through the use of superior materials and technological advancements to operational systems helps lower energy needs and provide the ability for reuse of stale energy, which goes a long way toward a net-zero footprint,” explains Matt Hutchins, principal at CAST Architecture. He adds that the approach for a smarter building envelope in home construction contributes to the sustainability of continued efficiency.
One example is mechanical ventilation exchangers that supply fresh air from reconditioned in- home air recirculated for heating and cooling purposes. In conjunction with ventilation systems, heat pumps are gaining popularity due to their ability to generate heat and cool intake air, eliminating the need to install an additional system for heat and cooling. Also, rooftop solar panels generating electricity have the added benefit of not releasing toxins into the environment.
Construction supporting cleaner air by lowering the demand and reusing energy begins with a sealed-tight construction approach. Heavy-duty, superior insulation enclosing the entire home, even under the flooring, is an example of an air- tight construction method. High- quality windows, often triple pane, retain cool and warm air, reduce UV rays and protect against outside air penetration.

Mindful construction for green building includes using scrap materials of wood, brick and plastic from building projects. The use of recomposed materials utilizing low -carbon production methods is essential to reduce harmful gases and landfill waste.
Incorporating more leading-edge green technology systems, superior durable products and recycled materials will help sustain a home’s energy effectiveness and preserve Seattle’s
“evergreen” eminence.
